Biology techniques form a common groundwork for a diverse group of scientists. People studying yeast, plants, fish, microbes, and humans all share a similar set of tools in the same way that automotive, circuit, and thermal engineers share a similar set of mathematical tools.
The tools and concepts of modern biology are often most easily described by way of sequences of images. (This is quite different than concepts in engineering which are most easily explained by mathematical equations). Biology textbooks are filled with intricate artwork describing concepts. The goal of this project was to establish a large set of high quality, publicly available, open source, royalty free, animations explaining molecular biology tools and concepts that can be easily viewed by anyone anywhere. We also made the source code of the animations available, so that others can customize the animations for their specific applications.
